In 1998, David Crary decided he’d had enough of the mountains of paperwork, laborious billing process and hassles communicating with his service technicians in the field. In short, his irrigation business needed technology to help him save time and grow his business.
So he founded HindSite Software, with the goal of creating field service software for the irrigation industry that made it easier to manage their customer data, schedule and route their the crews, collect data in the field and bill in minutes, not hours. Since that time, HindSite has grown to deliver software for the Green Industry (lawn care software, landscaping business software, etc.), but also for plumbers, electricians, security installation companies, fence installers, computer repair businesses and many other field service businesses.
But in December, he’s getting back to his roots. Crary will be speaking at the Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia’s (IIABC) 33rd Annual Convention and Trade Show on December 6th. His presentation, titled Empowering Your Business with Technology, will show irrigation contractors how to leverage software and other technology to eliminate the redundant steps in a typical contractor’s process. He’ll show them how they’ll save time, money and stress by introducing irrigation business software into their businesses.
“Your typical contractor doesn’t care about how data flows through their business, “ explains David Crary. “But understanding how your data flows within your business is the key to using technology effectively and empowering your business. In this presentation, I’ll show irrigation contractors how to analyze their data flow and leverage irrigation business software to manage their business.”
For example, many irrigation businesses use GPS devices. However, they don’t have a fully integrated system, and service technicians or crew leaders must type addresses on their GPS device. Typing in each address can waste 45 seconds to a minute every time they need to go to a new location, which can be as many as 5 to 10 times per day. Add it all up, and over the course of a typical year, irrigation businesses may waste days typing in addresses on their GPS device.
“I ran an irrigation business for 22 years,” says Crary. “I was losing money – and wasting time – at every turn, until I began to use technology, specifically irrigation software, to streamline processes. Then, I was able to do more with a lot less. I saved time. I saved money. And I grew my business. Technology empowered me to work on my business, not in it.”
The Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia was formed in 1979 to provide a forum for manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to get together to communicate and exchange information about the irrigation industry. The Annual Convention and Trade Show will take place from December 4-7 at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort and Conference Center in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
