Park Avenue Plastic Surgeon Perfects the Ipanema Tummy Tuck™
A Safer, Less Invasive Tummy Tuck Technique for Mommy Makeovers . . . and More
At the annual conference of the International Society for Dermatologic Surgery, held in Lucerne, Switzerland, from October 18-20, 2012, board-certified plastic surgeon, Robert H. Gotkin, MD, introduced a new, state-of-the-art procedure for restoring the shape and tone of the abdomen following pregnancy or weight loss – the Ipanema Tummy Tuck. This innovative, minimally invasive procedure uses laser energy to enhance the cosmetic result and shorten the recovery time compared to a traditional tummy tuck (also known as an abdominoplasty). In addition to diminishing the extent and time of recovery, the Ipanema Tummy Tuck significantly decreases the risk of side effects and complications compared to traditional abdominoplasty.
Although liposuction is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed worldwide, it has a limited ability to tighten the loose abdominal skin often seen following pregnancy and weight loss. According to Dr. Gotkin, “a tummy tuck is the only surgical procedure that provides the cosmetic result that women want. Conventional tummy tucks, however, are associated with a very high complication rate and a long recovery period; this creates a strong sense of apprehension among the very patients who stand to benefit most from the procedure.” Dr. Gotkin developed the Ipanema Tummy Tuck working with a fellow plastic surgeon in the south of Brazil while the two were performing a tummy tuck on a woman who had traveled from Rio de Janeiro for her surgery. Already an expert in Smartlipo® (laser-assisted liposuction), Dr. Gotkin employed Smartlipo as part of the overall procedure. “The laser energy of Smartlipo ‘melts’ the fat, converts it into a liquefied state and requires much less suction to remove it. This makes the procedure less traumatic to the tissues and less invasive.” Dr. Gotkin goes on to say, “the laser energy also results in less bleeding during the procedure, less bruising afterwards and helps to further tighten the overlying skin.”
Shortly after returning from Brazil, Dr. Gotkin conducted a clinical study in the United States, sponsored by Cynosure, Inc., which proved the benefits of the Ipanema Tummy Tuck. Thirty-two patients were enrolled in the study; all of them had the Ipanema Tummy Tuck and were followed post-operatively for 12-22 months. Results revealed that, in comparison to a traditional tummy tuck, the Ipanema Tummy Tuck is safer, healing is quicker, and the recovery is more rapid and much more comfortable. No drains were used and many patients took only plain Tylenol® during the entire post-operative period. No narcotics! Preliminary results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery in Phoenix, AZ, in April, 2010. Dr Gotkin has continued to refine the procedure, which has all the cosmetic benefits of traditional abdominoplasty, but is safer, has fewer problems during surgery and a much lower complication rate following surgery. Additional information about the study, the procedure, patient photos and interviews with Dr. Gotkin are available upon request.
As a plastic surgeon practicing in the 21st century, who understands the dangers of sun exposure, Dr. Gotkin can no longer advocate the “tall and tan and young and lovely” girl who strolled the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the famous song from the 1960s, but he does believe the Ipanema Tummy Tuck is an ideal procedure for anyone who wants to look slim and toned. As Gotkin says, “who wouldn’t want to be that woman . . . who ‘when she passes, each one she passes goes Ahhh’”?
