As insurance agents, we find that most issues with improper coverage can be resolved with awareness, especially with specialty insurance such as flood policies
Amherst, Massachusetts (PRWEB) December 04, 2012
The insurance agents at Encharter Insurance have been getting a lot of questions about flood insurance since Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast. Insurance agents are the best resource when searching for answers about any type of coverage, but here are just a few helpful hints to spur those conversations on with resident insurance experts:
Water damage caused by flooding is NOT covered by a homeowners insurance policy. In most cases, a typical home insurance policy only covers water damage that occurs as a result of equipment failure; i.e. a pipe ruptures or an appliance malfunctions. In the event of a flood and without the proper flood insurance coverage, residents would be unprotected.
Flood insurance policies will typically protect against losses due to water damage from a flood, but these losses are subject to the deductible and the flood water must cover at least 2 acres and/or affect at least two adjacent properties, one of which is the insured’s.
Flood insurance policies do not become effective until 30 days after the purchase date. Due to this unique stipulation on the effective date of average flood coverage, it is crucially important to plan ahead with these policies.
“As insurance agents, we find that most issues with improper coverage can be resolved with awareness, especially with specialty insurance such as flood policies,” said David Siekman, Sales and Marketing Manager for Encharter Insurance. “Your insurance agents are a knowledge resource to you. Take advantage of their expertise by asking them questions. The greater awareness you have of your risks and exposures (and how you can protect yourself from losses), the better protected you and your family will be.”
