The report claims that Southwark Council in London have saved £1,400,000 by catching fraudsters who were falsely claiming benefit in council tax discounts for living alone. The voice risk analysis system works by assessing the pitch of callers voices when they are asked questions over the telephone by trained council officials.
If the system suspects a lie is told a beep will sound in the ear of the highly trained operator. Claimants are warned in advance that the phone call is recorded and monitored.
