PHILADELPHIA, PA (PRWEB) December 05, 2012
Torcon, a regional leader in construction management, has been selected by St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children to provide pre-construction and construction management services for a new four-floor 135,000 square foot Pediatric Critical Care Tower and a new medical office building to house the Center for the Urban Child, a community-based initiative designed to provide high-quality, efficient, cost-effective care to urban children while addressing the social determinants of their health, such as food insecurity and violence.
The Pediatric Critical Care Tower will be a focal point of the project encompassing 50 new critical care beds and 60 Level IIIC neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds, which will allow the hospital to offer larger, private critical care rooms that incorporate advanced technologies while comfortably accommodating families. The Center for the Urban Child, which will unite several pediatric practices in one 30,000 square foot building, will enable children with health disparities to have access to the wraparound services to address social needs in real time. With already more than 350 children visiting these clinics each day, the expansion will allow the hospital to accommodate up to 50 percent more patients.
“Torcon recognizes the vital nature of St. Christopher’s mission, and we are proud to have been selected as a partner in this endeavor. We feel confident that our experience in healthcare construction will benefit this project and the community that surrounds it,” noted Torcon Co-President Joseph Torcivia. Torcon Vice President Michael Armento will contribute to project planning and follow-through by consistent oversight and support of the project team.
The expansion will allow the hospital to better care for children in the surrounding community, and will create more than 300 new jobs to support the local economy. The community response to the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. “We are very excited to bring an expansion to North Philadelphia that addresses the primary healthcare needs of local children as well as the complex critical care needs of neonates and children throughout the region and beyond,” says St. Christopher’s CEO Carolyn Jackson.
