Casey Scalf, NRHA’s Web Developer/Designer is the featured photographer in a Selden Gallery exhibit titled “Augmented Norfolk,” which opens with a reception from 6 pm to 8 pm Friday, December 7, on the first floor of 208 East Main St. The exhibit continues through January 9.

Augmented Reality is when a past-era photograph is inserted into the center of a present day photo of the same area. “My intention with these photographs was to give viewers a glimpse of Norfolk’s past while highlighting the city’s amazing transformations,” said Scalf, who was the creative force behind the exhibit.

Ms. Scalf brings her 12 years of experience as a professional photographer to her work at NRHA. She was first inspired by the idea of an augmented reality collection when she began the process of creating NRHA’s digital photo archive. “I began to see Norfolk in a new light and I wanted others to experience that as well,” said Scalf.

NRHA’s Communications and Marketing Department, assisted by a freelance architectural photographer, completed the digital photo archive last year. Dusty old boxes of slides, photo negatives and prints were digitally converted into an online searchable database, which is accessible to the public. The digitized photo archive contains over 20,000 photos which transport the viewer through over 140 years of Norfolk’s rich history.

“We are very proud of Casey’s work on the Augmented Norfolk exhibit and thrilled to see how it showcases the renewal that NRHA has helped bring to Norfolk,” said NRHA Chief Executive Officer Shurl Montgomery.
