Colle Responds to Kansas Growers’ Push for Organic Farming

On December 7, Colle Farmers Market, a growing community of organic farmers markets, responds to the increasing push for organic farming among Kansas farmers who gathered at a recent forum on organic agriculture.

A report in the Salina Journal indicates the continued rise in interest with going organic within the agricultural community. The article reveals that about 70 farmers attended the day-long forum, which was cosponsored by the Kansas Organic Producers Marketing Association and Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops and organized by the Kansas Rural Center. According to the article, of the attendees, more than half were farmers who have already become certified-organic operations, or are transitioning or beginning organic farmers, and about a third were considering the prospect of going organic. The article reports that almost all who attended wanted further information and, crucially, they wanted access to local support networks and further educational resources. It’s no surprise, given the rise in demand; the report states that “organic production is one of the fastest growing sectors within agriculture averaging about 18 to 20% per year the past 15 years.”

One presenter discussed the help available from the EQIP Organic Initiative; the program is there to provide transitional and existing organic farmers with “cost-share assistance...in adopting conservation practices (such as crop rotations, cover crops, nutrient management, grazing management, etc.) to facilitate the transition.”

A major theme that surfaced in the forum’s discussions was the fact that organic farming is a huge boon to ecosystem sustainability. According to the article, some farmers worry about profitability in making the switch to organic; while it's true that organically-grown crops may yield about 10% less than traditional crops, this is a short-term flaw. In fact, the article reveals that the regimen of crop rotation that underpins organic farming has proven to be the sustainable option for farmers who are looking ahead. The article explains that crop rotation is key to maintaining soil fertility and long-term health.
