The BIA/Kelsey survey, based on data from small and mid-size businesses in the third quarter of 2012, found that, despite the tough economic climate, a full 40% expect to increase their budgets for digital marketing in 2013. Only 3.7% said they were going to decrease their online advertising budgets, while 48% of respondents said they would maintain the same budgets. Because SMB are smaller, they can be more agile than big businesses that find it difficult to change with the times,” Iaboni says.
Asked whether it was essential for traditional “brick and mortar” businesses to have a digital presence, Nadia comments, “While there is still a large number of small and mid-size businesses that are not yet online, a web site and social media can help increase market potential, and develop a sense of community and customer engagement.”
Nadia says the most important step for SMB is to establish what channels are suitable for the business. “The challenge for SMB is finding out which digital channels will best suit their needs. Which ones do you pick to reach your audience? It’s not easy.”
