Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm, reports that small and mid-size businesses (SMB) are becoming increasingly aware that digital marketing and online advertising are paramount for ongoing success. By ignoring digital media, many SMB owners are inadvertently sending customers to those competitors that are making use of this medium. Numero Uno Web Solutions cites a recent survey by BIA/Kelsey as a confirmation of this trend.
The BIA/Kelsey survey, based on data from small and mid-size businesses in the third quarter of 2012, found that, despite the tough economic climate, a full 40% expect to increase their budgets for digital marketing in 2013. Only 3.7% said they were going to decrease their online advertising budgets, while 48% of respondents said they would maintain the same budgets. Nadia Iaboni, Digital Solutions Manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions, believes that businesses are falling short of their full potential because of a failure to embrace digital technology. The Internet creates a level playing field, she observes; and by using a variety of digital marketing devices, SMB can significantly enhance their chances at increasing sales.
“Those SMB that have embraced digital marketing are increasing their online advertising budgets because the number of channels is growing steadily,” says Iaboni. “Facebook continues to be the favourite avenue for SMB when it comes to promotional purposes. To increase brand awareness, SMB are also turning to mobile platforms; including mobile phone apps for customer loyalty programs.”
“Advertising in newspapers still accounts for 31% of SMB advertising budgets, but I think businesses are discovering that a range of digital platforms are key to engaging a broader audience,” she adds.
“It’s important to note that with the proliferation of online digital marketing channels, and the growing Internet economy, it’s easier and cheaper to start up a business. Because SMB are smaller, they can be more agile than big businesses that find it difficult to change with the times,” Iaboni says.
Asked whether it was essential for traditional “brick and mortar” businesses to have a digital presence, Nadia comments, “While there is still a large number of small and mid-size businesses that are not yet online, a web site and social media can help increase market potential, and develop a sense of community and customer engagement.”
Nadia says the most important step for SMB is to establish what channels are suitable for the business. “The challenge for SMB is finding out which digital channels will best suit their needs. Which ones do you pick to reach your audience? It’s not easy.”
“Using social media and digital marketing avenues in an informal manner will not help you reach your goals. In order to drive targeted qualified customers to your web site, social media pages, or mobile platforms are what you need to take a strategic approach. At Numero Uno Web Solutions, we understand the ins and outs of digital advertising, how it can impact the bottom line of a small- and mid-size business, and how to run a successful digital marketing campaign,” she concludes.
