On December 12, organic farming community Colle Farmers Market recognized the Bali government for its recent award from the Indian Agriculture Ministry in Jakarta. The province's integrated farming initiative (Simantri) subsidizes farmers in making the switch to organic farming and the use of alternative energy.
In an article published by Bali Daily, the governor noted that they view the award as a kind of “appreciation of the province’s strong commitment to develop organic agriculture” from the central government. According to the article the program supports “a wide array of organic and green practices, from using non-chemical fertilizer to establishing biogas power plants.” Implemented in 2009, the article reports that there are currently 325 farmers' groups that have adopted the program, and another 150 are joining in the incoming year.
Bali Daily states, “Made Astawa from Tumang Sejahtera Simantri group of Blangsinga in Saba village, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, admitted that the Simantri program had brought huge benefits to local farmers. His group has been implementing the Simantri system since 2010 and is producing 10 tons of organic fertilizers and 10,000 liters of bio-urine per year, which is used to fertilize 15 hectares of rice fields in Saba village.”
The article states that the government is hoping the push towards eco-friendly practices will also encourage tourism. According to the article, tour operators are being encouraged to create packages advertising the “greening” of Bali, allowing visitors to visit villages that have gone organic. The governor envisions that “someday, tourists will come to Bali not only for the culture and beautiful nature, but also for healthy living with organic products,” Bali Daily reports.
Colle responds to the news, congratulating the Bali government on their award and their commendable, forward-thinking approach to farming. They suggest that increased cooperation between governments and farmers and incentive programs of this type will help to make organic farming the future norm rather than a historic trend.
