The Michelangelo hand is a myoelectric hand developed by Otto Bock, a German prosthetic company responsible for many extraordinary innovations in prosthetic devices. Myoelectric devices are particularly promising because they use the electrical activity in the patient's skeletal muscles to control the prosthetic device, which produces a more realistic movement that is not controlled with switches or other mechanical devices. Less than 100 people around the world have been fitted with the Michelangelo hand.
The Michelangelo hand has active movement in the thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger. The ring finger and little "pinky" finger are controlled by the movement of the other fingers. The active movement of three fingers provides more options for grip than previous prostheses. Overall, there are seven different positions that can utilize myoelectric control. Additionally, the wrist can be repositioned, offering a more natural and comfortable position.
The appearance of the Michelangelo hand is far more lifelike and natural than some existing prostheses, and multiple skin tones are available. Additionally, the materials were selected to mimic the feel of a real hand.
