Gallbladder removal surgery, or cholecystectomy, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the US. This surgery completely removes the gallbladder from the body. While the digestive system can function without the gallbladder, it is less effective. The gallbladder’s main function is to store and concentrate bile, which is produced by the liver. When food containing fat is consumed, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestines so that fats can be digested. Without a gallbladder, the digestion of fats and proteins becomes more difficult and can overtax the liver.
Maintaining a healthy gallbladder is much more desirable than having it removed. There are many natural ways to improve the health of your gallbladder. The most fundamental step in treating the gallbladder is to change the diet from the typical fat and sugar laden western diet to a diet high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. There are also many herbs and amino acids that can improve and maintain the health of the gallbladder.
Chanca Piedra is a traditional remedy for gallstones and kidney stones in Peru and Brazil. Chanca Piedra translated to English is stone breaker. It is well known to dissolve stones and break apart calcifications in the liver, gallbladder and kidney.
Dandelion is cultivated widely in India for treating liver problems. The root contains high levels of Choline and the flowers contain high levels of lecithin. Both lecithin and choline are used to support liver health.
Milk Thistle is used widely to treat many types of liver disease. It helps with cell regeneration, helping the liver and body to cope with the effects of exposure to toxins. It is also widely used for dissolving and flushing out gallstones.
Glycine & Taurine are amino acids that combine with bile acid to create bile salts. The addition of Glycine and Taurine to the bile acid makes it more water-soluble. This makes bile salts better at breaking down fats than bile acid alone.
Phosphatidyl choline is a key component of bile acid and acts as an emulsifier. An emulsifier helps to break down fats similar to the way soap breaks down oils. Phosphatidyl choline also helps to export fat from the liver.
Bupleurum is a deep liver cleanser which rejuvenates the circulatory system. It helps to expel the bile sludge in the liver and gallbladder. Bupleurm has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as a liver remedy for over 2000 years.
Peppermint oil increases the production of bile in the liver. It also increases the flow of all of the digestive juices in the stomach and it relaxes the main muscles in the digestive system. The relaxation effect of peppermint helps the gallbladder relax so that toxins can be released.
All of these herbs and amino acids are helpful to maintain gallbladder health on their own, but they are much more powerful when combined. A product called Glytamins combines peppermint, bupleurum and chanca piedra with the amino acids: glycine, taurine and phosphatidyl choline. The peppermint acts to relax the gallbladder and liver and increase bile production. The chanca piedra dissolves stones and the bupleurum expels the bile sludge and dissolved stones from the gallbladder. The amino acids then help rebuild the bile in the liver which helps to prevent the recurrence of an excess of bile sludge and gallstones.
Glytamins is delivered in a suppository form which helps to deliver the herbs and amino acids more directly to the gallbladder. Oral supplements have to go through the digestive acids of the stomach, which can decrease their effectiveness. The Glytamins suppository goes directly into the heptic portal vein, which feeds directly into the liver and then the gall bladder. By using the suppository form, the herbs and amino acids are more effectively utilized by the gallbladder.
Although the digestive system can function without the gallbladder, fats and proteins will be harder to digest. Restoring health to the gallbladder will maintain the long term health of the digestive system much better than removing the gallbladder. There are instances where the gallbladder is too diseased to be saved. The herbs and amino acids listed above, when combined with a healthy diet, can help rejuvenate the health of the gallbladder. They can also help the body cope with the removal of the gallbladder when it is too diseased to save.
