Need a sudden mood pick-up or a boost in productivity? The answer to lowing stress may be closer than expected. Two recent experiments from Scientific American, which reported to the Journal of Research in Personality suggests these circumstances:

"Either the subject had a pet nearby, simply thought about a pet or, in the control group, had no pet involvement. In the first experiment, participants were asked to come up with a list of goals and assess their confidence in attaining them. Those who had their pet in the room or on their mind, identified more goals and felt more self-confident about those goals than the control group. In the second experiment, subjects performed a distressing cognitive task while their blood pressure was assessed. Both pet groups had lower blood pressure during the task than the control group".

The interesting part of this study is the fact that even just merely thinking about a beloved pet helps boost self-esteem and productivity. It’s the confidence that the pets bring to the owners that makes this study worthwhile for experts to look into. The study isn’t finished and there are more facts to be discovered, however one thing is very clear—if a pet owner is near their pet, or carries around a photo of their pet, they are more likely to make clear and confident decisions in many different situations. We surveyed readers and asked if this study holds true in their own lives. Over half explained that when in stressful situations, their pet helps lighten their mood and betters their day. To think that a pet could make someone more productive isn't very surprising, as a matter of fact, most pet owners would agree that it makes perfect sense.
