On December 12, 2012, Yumi Media released a statement following a Voxy article regarding Australian unveiling a new meat-free week to raise awareness at how much meat is consumed in Australia.
According to the Voxy article, “Australia’s inaugural Meat Free Week, 18-24 March 2013, was unveiled at the 2012 Voiceless Awards in Sydney last night (Wednesday 28 November) and launches with a new website on Saturday 1 December - meatfreeweek.com.”
The article states that the Meat Free Week movement is to enlighten people and raise awareness at how much meat Australia, as a nation consumes. The article also mentions that bringing awareness to the way meat is produced and manufactured is also a contributing factor to Meat Free Week. According to the article, “With an average of 120kg of annual meat consumption per capita, Australia is ranked as the second biggest meat eater in the world after the USA.”
Meat Free Week co-founder Melissa Dixon stated in the article, "We know it’s a big ask to cut back something you love to eat, but when people know the facts, we’re confident they’ll commit to eating less meat and when they do, make the choice to buy ethically produced meat.” The article informed that money raised during Meat Free Week will be given to Voiceless, an animal protection institute.
Yumi Media offered there comments on the recent news regarding Australia’s new change. “I applaud a meat-loving nation such as Australia for dedicating a week out of the year to avoid meat and spare some animals lives,” says Yumi Media representative Takara Licausi. “For meat alternatives, I recommend a Quorn meat substitute that replicates the taste and texture of real meat.”
