Twins Tanesha and Tiwan Sweet smiled as they talked to “Good Morning America” a few months ago about how breast reduction surgery changed their lives.
Inspired by the girls’ stories of physical pain, emotional pain and harassment, ImplantInfo reports the ten most common reasons for breast reduction for people like the Sweet sisters.
After going from a 40G to a 38DD, Tanesha increased her social confidence.
“Women often come in with social complaints," Dr. Russell Ashinoff tells GMA. “People make fun of them, stare and there's outright sexual harassment; it's hard to believe it's still happening in 2012."
Ashinoff is the plastic surgeon who oversaw both women’s procedures.
“Tanesha and Tiwan were victims of torment,” says Shawn Miele for ImplantInfo. “While that’s highly unfortunate, it’s not uncommon for women – or even men – with over-large breasts. The overarching goals for most breast reduction candidates, in fact, are to reduce the physical pain, emotional pain and insults they’ve endured for years.”
The American Society for Plastic Surgeons reports that in 2011, an estimated 63,000 women underwent breast reduction surgery – which, in women, is categorized as breast reconstruction. That same year, breast reduction ranked among the top five cosmetic surgical procedures for men and teens ages 13 to 19.
“Breast reduction candidates generally look to plastic surgery,” adds Miele, “to restore or provide balance on three levels: Physical, emotional and aesthetic.”
On the whole, Miele says, women like the Sweet twins are simply looking to achieve better proportions, have the freedom to do and wear what they want, and dispense with unpleasant physical and emotional limitations.
That is where reduction mammaplasty comes in. It helps correct problems such as physical pain, poor posture and a nagging, negative self image. Surgery involves the removal of excess fat, skin and glandular tissue from within and around the breasts. The procedure is sometimes covered by insurance and can be performed any time after a woman’s breasts have matured.
A list of the 10 most common reasons people give for pursuing breast reduction surgery can be found at ImplantInfo.
