Kicking Coach Michael Husted Working with Internet Kicking Sensation Havard Rugland

I’ve played amateur soccer most of my life, but before this trip I never had a coach, or real training regarding kicking. So I was not sure what my level was like, compared to other kickers.

Former NFL kicker Michael Husted is currently training Norwegian Internet kicking sensation Havard Rugland, whose YouTube kicking video has generated almost 500,000 views since he posted it on YouTube less than 90 days ago.

Rugland, who has played amateur soccer most of his life in his home country of Norway, says he never dreamed that one day he would be training with one of the top kicking coaches in the U.S. and thinking about playing in the NFL.

But now, because of his kicking video, he is living in that dream.

“I've lived all my life in Ålgårdof, a little town outside of Stavanger, Norway,” says Rugland. “I’ve played amateur soccer most of my life, but before this trip I never had a coach, or real training regarding kicking. So I was not sure what my level was like, compared to other kickers.”

According to Husted, he ‘compares’ quite well.

“Havard has incredible talent as a kicker,” says Husted. “He has a canon for a leg. As he continues to refine his technique, he could be one of the strongest kickers in the NFL.”

Husted should know, he kicked successfully in the NFL for 9 years. Husted says Rugland reminds him of some of the best kickers in the game.

“He reminds me a lot of Janokowski in terms of stature and strength,” says Husted. “Since he is a little older, Havard is very mature, which I believe will help him manage all of the pressure that comes with being a NFL kicker.”

Husted says he became aware of Rugland though a video he posted on Facebook.

“I saw the video that Havard had posted on YouTube via Facebook,” says Husted. “We then became friends on Facebook and started to communicate with one another. At that time, a GM from a NFL team contacted me about Havard. He wanted Havard to come to train with me in San Diego before they were going to fly him in for a workout.”

Rugland says having Husted as a kicking coach has been an amazing experience.

“I feel very lucky, getting the opportunity to come to America and work with Michael Husted,” says Rugland. “To work with him has been a great experience. We have worked a lot with my technique, getting it more related to American Football.”

“Since I have never played American Football, and I'm quite "green" in the game,” he adds. “Michael has been great in getting me ready for any try outs. He has taken very good care of me, both on and off the field, and he has made my stay here in San Diego perfect. So for me I couldn't ask for a better coach!”

Rugland says with Husted’s coaching, what was once a dream, might now become a reality.

“If you had asked me a couple of months ago, playing in the NFL was just a vague dream,” says Rugland. “But after the recent development and progress, my goal is to play in the NFL.”

A ‘vague’ dream turning to reality because of a video shared on the Internet.

That’s a story worth sharing.
