OSI Medical Centers has formed a new medical center focusing on pediatric orthopaedics. Currently, the nearest major children’s hospital is in Houston, Texas, so the formation of this medical center will aid greatly in the local treatment of childhood orthopaedic injuries, diseases and conditions in the Central Texas area. The center will be temporarily located at their primary practice location near the South Texas Medical Center while a new facility is being built at a north side location.
The OSI pediatric orthopaedic surgeons will focus their medical practice on the surgeries required for major medical conditions because the OSI medical services organization primary care physicians are able to care for most childhood medical conditions. The OSI pediatric orthopaedic doctors gained advanced training, knowledge and skill unique to the treatment of children. OSI doctors are for the most part, board certified in their specialty and have typically completed ten years of medical training:
OSI pediatric orthopaedic doctors will treat a variety of children's musculoskeletal problems, which are different from those of an adult. Because children are still growing, the body's response to injuries, infections, and deformities may be quite different than what would be seen in a full-grown person. A good example of this is intoeing in a toddler. Some of the problems children have with their bones and joints that are due to growth do not occur in adults, and the evaluation and treatment of a child is usually quite different than for an adult -- even for the same problem.
Children with complex pediatric problems are best managed by a medical-surgical team approach. Orthopaedic and Spine Institute is an interdisciplinary medical services organization that includes many medical specialties. This allows a team of specialists to assist the pediatric orthopaedic surgeon to diagnose, treat, and manage children's medical and musculoskeletal problems, such as:
At OSI children are not just small adults. They cannot always say what is bothering them, or answer medical questions, or be patient and cooperative during a medical examination. The inter disciplinary team approach at OSI will allow children to be referred from a primary care physician in-house, to the specialist required in the next step for treatment of children. OSI pediatric orthopaedic surgeons know how to examine and treat children in a way to help them be relaxed and cooperative. OSI pediatric orthopaedic surgeons also appreciate the worry that goes with having a child with a musculoskeletal problem, and they have experience in communicating with anxious family members.
OSI pediatric orthopaedic surgeons' offices are arranged and decorated with children in mind. Specially designed equipment, available toys, videos, and reading materials all help to create a comfortable and nonthreatening environment for the child. The OSI Pediatric Orthopaedic medical offices are nearing completion and will boast the life size figures of Marvel comic book characters such as the Hulk and Spiderman, in order to help children feel safe in the OSI medical environment.
