Victory Lane Karting, an innovator in Indoor Kart Racing based in Charlotte, NC has earned Orion Energy Systems’ Environmental Stewardship Award for the company’s reduction in energy consumption using Orion’s lighting platform.
Southpoint Solutions, a Charlotte, NC based energy service’s company, designed and installed the energy efficiency project at Victory Lane Karting utilizing the patented technology of Orion Energy Systems. The project included replacing 105 energy wasting high-intensity discharge (HID) light fixtures and 40 obsolete T12 strip fixtures with Orion’s energy efficient Compact Modular™, high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) technology.
In addition to improving the lighting in the facility, the project resulted in a reduction of lighting-related electricity consumption, and cost, by 66 percent. An added benefit is that lower electricity usage means less fossil fuel emissions associated with electricity production. By completing this project, Victory Lane Karting has indirectly reduced the amount of air pollution by 135 tons of carbon dioxide which has an equivalent impact of saving 16,868 gallons of gasoline annually or planting 37 acres of trees.
The project was partially funded by Duke Energy’s SmartSaver® program that provides rebate incentives designed to help businesses make energy-efficiency upgrades at a lower initial cost.
The current ownership team purchased Victory Lane in 2007. Since then they have continuously upgraded the 75,000 sq. ft. facility and 1/3 mile track, enabling Victory Lane to become one of the premier conference and entertainment venues in the region. Ed Bradford, a partner in Victory Lane, has been impressed with the new lighting system. He says, “Not only has this lighting project created more confidence in our customer’s driving abilities because they can see better on the track, it has created better lighting throughout the facility, and savings in energy cost.” Mr. Bradford has also noticed the effect the improved lighting has had on running the business. “With the new lighting system we can now easily switch lights on-and-off in different areas, and the improved lighting has made it easier to do maintenance on the cars.”
