Caring for Cats, Inc., a no-kill, all-volunteer cat shelter in North St. Paul, Minnesota and Pets Remembered Pet Cremation Care Center in New Brighton, Minnesota are working together to make the loss of a beloved family pet a little easier.

Through a recently-developed business partnership, pet owners who have had to say goodbye to their beloved cat can now donate food, bedding, medication, or other items to Caring for Cats shelter in memory of their pet. Direct monetary donations may also be made to the shelter to honor the memory of pets. For grieving cat owners, making a positive difference in the lives of shelter cats can go a long way in working through the emotional loss.

“We choose to look at pets as a family member and to assist people on their grief journey in a more gentle, timely, and personal manner,” said Skip Wyland and Carol Noren of Pets Remembered Cremation. “Intense grief over the death of a pet is normal and natural. Pets are a significant and constant part of our lives, a source of unconditional love and acceptance, comfort and companionship. The option of donating items to Caring for Cats to help other cats in need is a way to begin working through that grief.” Together, Skip and Carol have over 30 years of death care experience to assist people when their pet dies. Skip is a licensed funeral director and Carol is a retired hospice chaplain.

“We started working with Pets Remembered this year when they agreed to be a sponsor for our annual silent auction fundraiser for the shelter,” said Kelley Schmidt, Caring for Cats Shelter Operations Manager. “The more we worked with Skip and Carol, the more we saw how closely our missions were entwined. We help families and cats find each other at the beginning of their journey, and Pets Remembered honors families and pets with gentle care at the end of that journey. Our shelter kitties can directly and immediately benefit from these donations—warm beds, quality food, and free medication. It’s a win-win, and we are thankful for the compassion of those families who want the memory of their pet to live on through these gifts.”

“There is a definite need for gentle, personal attention to pets that have died,” said Carol. “For some, a pet may be their best friend. For others, a pet is an integral part of the family. It may be a child’s first experience with death. It is important to say good-bye in a meaningful way while embracing the memories of the pet.”

Cremation services at Pets Remembered are done on site, one-at-a-time, so families know that they are getting the ashes of their pet. Pets can be brought to the facility or picked up by Pets Remembered at their home, veterinary clinic, or even an affiliated funeral home. Ashes can be picked up or delivered within 24 hours.

“We serve the entire seven-county Twin Cities metro area,” said Skip, “but we can make arrangements for pets throughout the Midwest as well. Our compassion and care has no definitive, geographical market.” A flat reasonable fee of $195 for the complete service includes cremation, walnut-stained carved urn, certificate of cremation, grief materials, presentation bag, and web obituary. Additional accessories are also available.
