“More than 10 years of research into what triggers pivotal AHA!s has shown me that you can prime yourself for life-changing realizations.” Donna Hartney, Ph.D.

Researchers have found that losing weight is the number one New Year’s resolution. Working against the achievement of weight loss goals is a study revealing that more than three quarters of resolutions are abandoned before they are reached.
What makes the difference between success and failure when it comes to weight loss goals? Think “pivotal realization.”
Jeanette Keith, a Buffalo, N.Y.-based gastroenterologist, believes in the importance of insights when it comes to weight loss. In a 2011 interview with The Buffalo News, Dr. Keith said, “Every individual who I’ve talked to has had a different ‘aha moment.’ But what is similar is the inner motivation that allows them to stick with their program. Your friends and family may want it for you, but until you own it, the change just won’t happen.”
Theresa Benoit wrote in a recent blog post on the “Fit Approach” website that her weight-loss motivation came when she experienced a flash of clarity while looking at dated photographs of herself. For The Biggest Loser contestant Julie Hadden, the insight arrived when she was about to get tossed off the reality show. It was a pivotal moment that she would later recall in her book.
But aren’t life-changing insights like Benoit’s and Hadden’s something we can’t control – a hit or miss proposition? Aren’t they the product of fate, luck, or chance?
“That’s a common misconception,” says Donna Hartney, Ph.D., author of The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career. “More than 10 years of research into what triggers pivotal insights has shown me that you can prime yourself for life-changing realizations.”
Hartney’s research has allowed her to isolate the steps that help people generate those “aha” moments that can lead to weight loss resolutions that will be kept. “Be alert and notice how you see the world. Be curious about what you discover and reflect on what you find. Then, relax while you wait for an insight,” she advises.
“An ‘aha’ moment can help you achieve even the most elusive resolutions,” says Hartney.
Her new book, The AHA! Handbook: How to spark the insights that will transform your life and career, is the first research-based self-help book that teaches readers how to spark pivotal realizations.
