As a mother-to-be, whether or not to breastfeed is a big decision. When it comes to nursing twins, the benefits, but also the sacrifices, are doubled.
In its most recent feature article, Twin Life Magazine, a new online magazine for parents of twins, shares real moms’ insights about breastfeeding twins. The overall consensus? It’s not easy. According to the article, patience and perseverance are essential. For most moms of twins, a breast pump is a must. Supplementing with formula is a very real possibility. But if everything works out, the rewards are worth the effort.
In the article, mom blogger Farrah Ritter of Simpsonville, South Carolina, advises moms to be prepared for “a lot of work.” Sara Cohen of Maynard, MA and mom to 10-month-old boys Noah and Reese, shares the ups and downs that eventually gave way to success. “At the two month mark I thought, ‘I can’t do this forever,’ she says. “I was frustrated because I could only pump enough for one baby.” She sought advice and encouragement from a lactation consultant and things then “clicked,” she says. “It’s just this closeness that I really, really love.”
Twin Life Magazine’s article includes helpful tips from expert mom of twins Cheryl Lage, author of "Twinspiration: Real Life Advice from Pregnancy Through the First Year".
An insightful Q&A from lactation consultant Raechel Hackney, RN, IBCLC, from Lactation Care, Inc. is also featured in the magazine.
