Take Cover This Summer From Deadly UV Rays On The Lake

During the warmer months, UV (Ultraviolet) radiation from the sun is intensified, especially on lakes where it is reflected from the water. Experts at iboats.com say this can be especially damaging to boaters who are exposed to prolonged UV rays. The results are permanent and cannot be reversed.

Draper, UT (PRWEB) June 23, 2012

During the summer months, UV (Ultraviolet) radiation from the sun is intensified, especially on lakes where it is reflected from the water, officials at iboats.com said. They say this can be especially damaging to boaters who are exposed to prolonged UV rays. The results are permanent and cannot be reversed.

According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, more than 1 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer, the leading form of cancer in the United States, every year. Exposure from the sun accounts for more than 90 percent of all types of skin cancer. In the early 1990’s research started to indicate the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and public awareness was increased.

“Of the thousands of boaters and fishermen we work with daily,” says Bruno Vassel, owner of the online boating store iboats.com, “one of the main reasons they request a boat bimini top is because they are aware of the damaging effects of UV rays and want the extra shade and protection a bimini top offers.”

Skin cancer developed from sun exposure is the result of damage done years before. Doctors are seeing younger and younger patients with sun-exposed skin cancer. So it becomes more important to take early precautionary measures to be protected from the sun rays by staying covered up.

If wearing a hat and clothing that covers exposed areas seems too restrictive, bimini tops for boats are a great alternative, allowing boaters to dress for water activities, yet still be shielded from the harmful rays of the sun. A bimini top, being basically a cabana or awning for the boat occupants, works like a large boat-size umbrella, allowing for freedom of movement on the boat while keeping UV rays, in combination with a good topical sunscreen lotion, off of the skin.

Recently the Skin Cancer Foundation recommended the Sunbrella fabric as an aid in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin. Bimini top fabrics shield as much as 98% of the UV rays, as well as reducing temperatures by 15 degrees.

“Sunbrella fabrics, as well as other marine polyester fabrics,” says Bruno, “are durable and economical and come in colors to match or compliment any boat color out on the market.” He says, “with the ease of setting up, and also storing and transporting a bimini top on a boat, there’s no excuse not to be protected from harmful UV rays while out enjoying a fun day on the water.”

So as the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends, and thousands of boaters monthly are requesting, stay covered up with a bimini top while out boating, and have a fun, and safe, summer of boating.
