Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) July 22, 2012
St. Mary Medical Center has been ranked as one of the top 20 hospitals in the region, and one of the top 30 hospitals in the state by U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Hospitals rankings. The hospital was also recognized for its high performances in six specialty areas.
In the report, St. Mary Medical Center ranked “high performing” in Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Pulmonology, and Urology. In past years, St. Mary has also been recognized for Ear, Nose & Throat; Diabetes & Endocrinology, as well as Orthopedics.
In each of these specialties, categories including patient safety, survival rates, advanced technologies, patient volume, nurse staffing and patient services were measured, and St. Mary Medical Center received many ratings of “high,” “highest” and “superior.”
“We are pleased with the U.S. News & World Report top rankings, and we attribute them to the conscientious performance of our dedicated long-term physicians and hospital staff who represent a higher level of care focused on mind, body, and spirit,” said Thomas Salerno, president and CEO of St. Mary Medical Center. “Over the last several years, St. Mary Medical Center has consistently been ranked at the top, which demonstrates our commitment to superior quality and patient safety,” added Salerno.
This is the first year that nationally ranked and high-performing hospitals will receive both state and regional rankings. The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow said that the hospital rankings are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Comarow.
These U.S. News & World Report rankings help reaffirm other high scores St. Mary Medical Center received earlier this year from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). St. Mary Medical Center earned the highest scores in the area for surgical care, heart attack or chest pain quickness of treatment, pneumonia care, and heart failure management; and for treatment of heart failure, St. Mary received 100% scores on all four measures. In addition, HealthGrades, the leading national independent health care ratings company, has placed St. Mary Medical Center among the Top 5% nationally in Emergency Medicine and Patient Safety. Other distinctions include a lower mortality rate than the national average, a Joint Commission Accredited Stroke Center, and a Level II Trauma Center.
