The international pool of PitchFest 2012 applicants, competing for the largest winner’s check in the pitch competition’s three-year history, has selected HEART: Flatline To Finish Line as once of 12 finalists. It was announced on August 28 by Chuck Braverman and Richard Propper, co-founders of WESTDOC: The West Coast Documentary and Reality Conference (Sept. 9-12) in Culver City, Calif.
ABOUT HEART: FLATLINE TO FINISH LINE
What happens when you take complicated cardiac patients who have faced death head on, and put them at the starting line of the world’s toughest endurance race?
They know rock bottom. They’ve been beaten down, chewed up and spit out. Their bodies have ached from doctors ripping open their chest. Their scars are a constant reminder that they were once weak and frail. These individuals have something to prove. To their family, their community, their doctors, and most importantly to themselves.
Follow David Watkins as he brings together individuals that clearly break the mold in what defines athletes. They will spend a year training and preparing to meet pain and suffering like never before. The cast is diverse, coming from all corners of the country and all lifestyles. Eight athletes. One goal. Making it to the finish line of Ironman®, a 140.6 mile endurance race that will test their minds, bodies and most importantly, their hearts. They prove that, with a strong mind, and a healthy amount of determination, you can accomplish the impossible. Learn what it means to have heart… an IronHeart.
“We are absolutely thrilled and honored to be part of such a distinguished group of finalists,” said David Watkins, Creator, Director and cast member of HEART: Flatline to Finish Line. “This is an opportunity we are really looking forward to. WESTDOC provides an incredbile venue that will allow us to showcase our film to some of the industry’s top minds.”
David Watkins and Ellen Charnley (Co-producer and cast member) will pitch to network executives and producers on Wednesday 12 September 2012.

PitchFest is WESTDOC 2012’s climactic all-day event on Wednesday, Sept. 12, where 12 finalists of documentary and reality producers pitch new works in progress directly to funders and network development executives in front of a live audience for potential acquisition, licensing or co-production funding. The pitches include at least three minutes each of video and verbal pitching, not exceeding eight total minutes.
The best pitch of the day, voted on by the audience, will be awarded the third annual “WESTDOC Pitcher Award,” as well as an increased cash prize. Thanks to the generous support of competition sponsor The Gilbert Group at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management-Bank of America, the winning prize money has been raised from $7,500 (2010) to $12,000.
“The PitchFest Committee had a very difficult time picking the top 12, especially when it got down to the last two or three entries,” says co-founder and committee chair Braverman, Academy Award®-nominated producer/director. “Nevertheless, 12 finalists have been selected that we think these are the ones that have the most potential. It should be extremely interesting to see how they are pitched and ultimately evaluated by the panel of experts and judged by the audience.”
The pitches of the 12 finalists will be publicly critiqued and evaluated currently by a 15-member panel of entertainment executives, including. Elizabeth Browde, Veria Living; Dave Davis, PBS-Oregon; Mary Donahue, History; Laura Fleury, A&E; Beth Hoppe, PBS; JT Ladt, National Geographic; Megan Lawrence, WeTV; Melanie Moreau, CMT; David Padrusch, Travel Channel; Amir Shalkhhaill (sp), Agent, WMEE; David Sherman, Agent, WMEE; Adam Steinman, Warner Bros. International Television; Joe Weinstock, Discovery; Brent Zacky, Logo; and Sean Zeid, Agent, Kaplan Stahler. A few remaining panelists will be announced at a later date.
“We’re extremely proud of the track record that our previous PitchFest competitions have produced, especially since both the 2009 and 2010 winners have blossomed into feature-length documentary films running in theaters right now and throughout the summer,” adds Propper, distribution executive and managing partner of WESTDOC. “While the PitchFest winning prize money is greater than it’s ever been, I think what’s more important to these filmmakers is who is going to be there to critique and who they are going to meet. WESTDOC’s PitchFest competition really has proven to be a tremendous and rare opportunity for those who want to take advantage of it.”
