Hi-Shear Technology Corporation (Hi-Shear), a subsidiary of the Chemring Group PLC ("Chemring"), announced that it was a contributor to the successful landing of the NASA Mars Science Laboratory’s Curiosity rover on Mars, August 5, 2012. Hi-Shear supplied over 200 high reliability separation nuts, cable cutters, pin-pullers and NASA Standard Initiators (NSIs) to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the mission, including ground test and flight units.
Dave Shingledecker, President of Hi-Shear stated, “We have a proud heritage of over 50 years of 100% mission success in support of U.S. space endeavors. Hi-Shear is honored to have supported NASA for this distinguished achievement and outstanding performance in space exploration.”
This was not Hi-Shear’s first opportunity to be part of such an historic event. Hi-Shear previously provided pyrotechnic devices facilitating the landing of two other smaller Mars Rovers; “Spirit” and “Opportunity.” NASA Standard Initiators, NASA Standard Detonators (NSDs) and other pyrotechnic hardware fundamental to the lift-off of many launch vehicles and deployment of satellites are part of Hi-Shear’s core business.
