New research suggests that osteoporosis in alcoholics may be reversed simply by abstaining from alcohol.
The study, to be published in the December 2012 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, suggests that in as little as eight weeks abstinence from alcohol could increase bone mineral density.
“There are so many negative physical effects from the abuse of alcohol, with the potential for osteoporosis being one of them,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “While the exact cause of decreased bone mass density among alcoholics isn’t exactly known, many doctors believe that it’s related to a combination of factors including liver disease, lack of regular exercise and a toxic effect of excess ingestion of alcohol at the cellular, bone-building level. Regardless of the cause, it’s encouraging for those suffering from alcohol-related osteoporosis to know that by simply getting into recovery can stop the detrimental effects of alcoholism and can also reverse some of those effects.”
The study, conducted at the Medical University Innsbruck, Austria, focused on 53 male patients who were enrolled in an alcoholism treatment program and who had no history of liver disease. The findings indicated that the decreased bone mass density in these patients actually increases with abstinence and moderate physical activity. As a result, the researchers behind the study suggest that it is best to include physical activity in rehab.
