As long as there have been drugs to abuse, there have been those who find creative ways to distribute and abuse them.
But, a new disturbing trend that is emerging among youth around the country is alarming: The trend is called “Skittle parties."
“The youth of America are intelligent, creative individuals,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “And, that’s a good thing, provided the innovative and creative spirit is channeled properly. This, however, is not the case with ‘Skittle parties’. There are some young people who, prior to the event, take pills like Ritalin, Tylenol with Codeine and narcotics that are in their parents’ or grandparents’ medicine cabinets. When they arrive at the party, they toss all of their pills into a collective bag with each taking turns on pulling out one or more pills and randomly ingesting it. It’s an incredibly dangerous thing, and is a trend that parents need to address with their children and discuss with other parents of their children’s friends. We’ve put together a few tips to help parents and grandparents combat this emerging trend.”
1. Make sure that prescription medications are under personal control at all times. This could mean taking extreme measures such as putting them in a lockbox.
2. If a lockbox isn't used for prescriptions, make certain you know kind of medication you have and always keep an accurate record of the quantities of each. This doesn’t have to be a complicated process; one option is to take a picture of the prescription bottle and pills and make a voice recording on your smartphone indicating the time and quantity you take. This way, you create an effortless, paperless trail that is with you at all times.
3. Make certain that you know who your children’s friends are, where they are and where they are planning to meet. Invite your children’s friends to spend time at your home. Communicate with the parents of your children’s friends your commitment to chaperone continually and to make certain that they do the same when the children gather in their home.
4. Maintain a steady connection with other parents. By maintaining connections with the parents of your children’s friends, you send a clear message to your children and their children that all you care and that your interest is not in invading their privacy, but that your sole interest is their well-being.
