As director Peter Jackson gets ready to unveil the first film of his latest trilogy to the world on November 28, “The Hobbit: There and Back Again”, the New Zealand tourism industry prepares to welcome Hobbit fans from around the world eager to experience the land that so closely resembles Middle Earth in the J.R.R. Tolkien novels and where all six epic “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” films were shot on location.

This time the New Zealand tourism industry is better prepared to embrace Hobbit fans than they were when Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” caught the imagination of fantasy fans worldwide in 2001, bringing huge numbers of tourists pouring into New Zealand to tour its movie locations for the next decade. No one quite predicted the extent “The Lord of the Rings” films would have on New Zealand tourism back then, so the elaborate sets were dismantled after filming and each location was meticulously returned to its original condition, to minimize environmental impact, before the films were even released – much to the disappointment of legions of fans who came to tour New Zealand specifically to see where their favourite scenes were filmed.

In hopes of luring Hobbit movie fans back to the “real” Middle Earth and dramatically boosting New Zealand visitor numbers again, this time around Jackson secured permission to build some permanent sets that were used during filming in 2011 that “Hobbit” fans will be able to visit now the filming has been completed. For instance, Jackson has returned to the Andrews’ private farm to painstakingly transform part of this working sheep and beef farm in Matamata into the Shire (the idyllic land of the hobbits) once again. This time, however, an elaborate and amazingly natural version of Hobbiton – including 44 unique hobbit holes nestled into the green rolling hills, the Green Dragon Pub, the Mill, a double-arched bridge and the famous Party Tree – have been permanently preserved so tourists can walk straight into the cheery world of the hobbits.

For Hobbit fans in search of an adventure of their own beyond just visiting the movie locations, Active New Zealand has added a visit to Hobbiton on to their 5-day “Kauri” Essence of the North Island tour that already includes hiking the famed Tongariro Crossing, soaking in hot pools, mountain biking in Whakarewarewa forest, attending a traditional Maori feast and cultural performance, and hiking to white sand beaches. This action-packed North Island New Zealand itinerary is designed to complement Active’s New Zealand South Island tours that are also activity-based, small group wilderness adventures.
