Celebrity Business Analyst released its weekly weekend box office analysis today, stating that the weekend’s results were somewhat surprising. The site reviewed the box office numbers on the back of a June 9 Forbes report on the record-setting opening weekend gross for new release The Purge.

On the weekend before the next big summer blockbuster (Man of Steel) is released, Celebrity Business Analyst expected things to be quiet at the box office. What happened instead was a shocker to the movie industry. New movie release The Purge, which hadn’t done well with critics, managed a $36.4 million opening weekend. According to Celebrity Business Analyst, this is a record-breaking event. The Purge, which was made on a meager $3 million budget, set a new record for R-rated horror films that aren’t sequels or remakes.

In second place was Fast & Furious 6 at $19.8 million, while Now You See Me came in at a close third at $19.5 million. Another new release, The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, pulled $18.1 million for its opening weekend. Celebrity Business Analyst’s chief writer said in a statement, “Wilson and Vaughn had a huge hit in 2005 with the comedy The Wedding Crashers, which pulled in $33.9 million on its opening weekend. This time around, opening reviews were damaging. Some have even called The Internship one big commercial for Google.”

In fifth and sixth spots were Epic and Star Trek Into Darkness at $12.1 million and $11.7 million, respectively. Meanwhile, Celebrity Business Analyst thinks Sony’s disappointment After Earth might be one to skip in the theaters, and instead watch later through dish promotion. The film moved down to the number seven spot with an $11.2 million weekend gross.

Celebrity Business Analyst sums up its weekend box office report with surprising numbers. Low-budget horror film The Purge was this week’s biggest hit by far, knocking Fast & Furious 6 from its two-week top spot and earning twice as much as fellow newcomer The Internship.
