Long before director Charles Reisner chose Dartmouth College Winter Carnival in snowy Hanover, New Hampshire as the setting for his tangled 1939 film romance, “Winter Carnival,” The Hanover Inn at Dartmouth experienced many hearts won and lost. The Inn seeks those stories of romance as part of the celebration of its history and the completion of a $40 million restoration.
An inn has stood on the same spot at the corner of Main and Wheelock Streets, overlooking the classic Dartmouth Green, since 1780. For at least the past 102 years since the creation of Winter Carnival as a February festival of winter sports and cozy firesides, midwinter has brought romance to Hanover and the Inn.
“We are proud of the fact that when alumni come home to Dartmouth, they come to The Hanover Inn,” said General Manager Joe Mellia. “As we complete the renovation of the Inn to ensure our services and hospitality meet the world class standards of Dartmouth College, we want to restore those authentic memories the Inn holds, too.”
As The Hanover Inn welcomes back alumni from the era of the film and at the same time helps recent grads plan their weddings at the Inn, the stories of Dartmouth romance walk hand in hand with the hotel’s history. The wife of a Class of ’42 grad remembered filling a letter to Hanover with the paper “kisses” streamers from a bag of chocolates. Another alum recalled sitting in a rocker on the front porch of the Inn the first time he glimpsed the woman who would be his wife as she crossed Wheelock Street.
The Inn hopes to gather stories from alumni, their spouses and past visitors in time for Winter Carnival (starting February 7, 2013) and Valentine’s Day. Stories can be emailed to info (at) hanoverinn (dot) com or mailed to The Hanover Inn at Dartmouth, c/o Erin Bragdon, Director of Sales, 2 East Wheelock Street, Hanover NH 03755. Once collected, the Inn plans to build a scrapbook that will be part of the Inn’s archives and to share the stories, with permission, on its website and Facebook pages. All contributions will be acknowledged with special recognition from the Inn.
