PROSALES magazine revealed today that Beaufort, N.C.-based Safrit’s Building Supply and its affiliates are the newest PROSALES Dealer of the Year.
The PROSALES Dealer of the Year Award honors outstanding achievements in construction supply operations, management and innovations, as well as meritorious service to the dealer’s community and to the lumber and building material industry. Only one construction supply dealer is chosen per year out of roughly 7,000 nationwide. As winner, Safrit’s is featured in the cover story in PROSALES’ January/February issue and on its website, prosalesmagazine.com.
“For nearly 38 years, owner Leonard Safrit has been molding Safrit’s Building Supply and its affiliates into one of the nation’s best-run building material dealers,” said Craig Webb, editor-in-chief of PROSALES magazine and author of the cover story. “It’s a national leader in such cutting-edge areas for dealers as centralized dispatching and activity-based pricing. It’s constantly diversifying into new products to eke the most value possible out of its modest coastal North Carolina market. And it sets an example for the thousands of smaller lumberyards and specialty product dealers nationwide that struggle every day against the big-box stores and regional building material competitors.”
Above all, PROSALES’ Dealer of the Year award honors Leonard Safrit, whose passion for both numbers and for people has galvanized Safrit’s and its fellow stores since this former sawmill went exclusively into retail sales in 1975. Safrit’s focused pretty much solely on its home county just south of the Outer Banks until 1988, when Leonard Safrit bought a lumberyard one county west in Jacksonville, NC, home of the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base. After another purchase a decade later, that store became known as Jacksonville Builder’s Supply.
In 1997, Safrit built a small facility midway between his two yards, gave it the original company name of East Hardwoods, and created one of the first—and still one of the few successful—centralized dispatch facilities in the lumber and building material industry. This hub not only serves as the place where lumber and related commodities are sent to customers in both directions but also is the place that organizes and controls shipments made out of Beaufort and Jacksonville.
The efficiencies gained through this system are one reason why Safrit’s is a rarity among dealers in that it has turned a profit each of the last 37 years. The vast majority of building material dealers nationwide recorded a loss during at least one of the past half-dozen years, surveys indicate.
Aside from its top-notch operations, Safrit’s also is a strong supporter of its communities. Leonard Safrit was named a few years ago by the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce as its employer of the year, and he also served as Grand Master of the North Carolina Masons. In addition, Safrit is a past president of the Southern Building Material Association, the group for dealers in mid-Atlantic states, and has served on committees of Lumbermens Merchandising Corporation, the nation’s biggest dealer co-op.
