WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) January 09, 2013
Stephen Reilly has been named the new Executive Director of the Fulbright Association. Reilly takes over from Mary Ellen Schmider, interim Executive Director, who served through December 31, 2012. Dr. Schmider will resume her duties on the Board of Directors as Vice-President.
Reilly comes to the Fulbright Association from Global Experiences, an international education organization he founded that provides internships, foreign language training, and English language training abroad. He received a Fulbright scholarship to Sweden, where he earned a master’s degree in peace and conflict studies at Uppsala University. Reilly has also been an active member and leader with the National Capital Area Chapter of the Fulbright Association. He was selected from a strong field of 145 applicants. Said 2011-2012 Fulbright Association President Patricia Krebs, “With his passion for international exchanges and his experience … Steve brings a strong background to the role of ED.”
The selection of a new executive director capped an unprecedented year of change for the Fulbright Association. Dr. Schmider oversaw the migration to a new membership database, the awarding of the Fulbright Prize to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders, the hosting of the Fulbright Association Annual Conference in London, UK, and revitalization in local chapters.
The Fulbright Association is the official American alumni organization of those who have had Fulbright grants to study, teach and work abroad. Now in its sixty-sixth year, the Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the United States Government. The goal of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding and promote leadership development through learning and international cooperation. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided over 300,000 participants with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research in the United States and more than 155 countries. Approximately 8,000 grants are awarded annually to students, teachers, scholars, artists, scientists, professionals and host institutions.
