On January 11, Linus Bike, a producer of city bikes, offers their support to Bakersfield, California, a community that’s seeking infrastructure improvements for cyclists.

A recent article from The Bakersfield Californian reports that city planners, along with a team of consultants, held a public workshop in an effort to gain feedback regarding bike paths and lanes in the area. The article cites Jennifer Donlon Wyant of Alta Planning + Design who explained that “One of the main goals of the workshop was to see what bike riders already know about existing bike routes, such as where lanes are broken up and how to make riders feel safer, especially near moving cars.”

According to the article, the city of Bakersfield has hired the consultants to create a new bicycle transportation plan. After the plan, which will improve the bike paths and lanes across 170 miles, is created and certified, the city will apply for Caltrans’ funding, reports the article.

China Reevers, a representative of city bikes company Linus Bike, extends her support for the city of Bakersfield. “To undergo a complete overhaul of the bicycle infrastructure of Bakersfield is a wonderful and worthwhile commitment. It’s refreshing and rewarding to see how seriously cities are taking cycling nowadays,” stated Reevers. “I recommend that Bakersfield adds additional bicycle paths in convenient areas and popular shopping spots. This will encourage people to either cycle more or start cycling. By seeing new bike paths springing up, more members of the community are likely to take up bicycle transportation.”

The article reports that cycling accidents have prompted the Bakersfield bike transportation plan. The Bakersfield Californian states, “Using data from the California Highway Patrol, Alta Planning + Design totaled up 256 collisions between 2006 and 2010. These included bike riders being hit by cars but also collisions with other bikes, pedestrians and objects.” In addition to creating safer biking infrastructure, Bakersfield is hopeful to encourage more cycling in the city.
