Sometimes an event happens in life that affects a person so strongly that it makes one wonder how the people involved felt, and how they handled their emotions. Shelby Nolan’s The Fog explores this, by telling the story of a woman who lost her son and is struggling to hold her marriage together without him.
When her son, Rusty, is killed in a tragic accident, Rocky Hollon finds her life in shambles and her marriage strained as she contends with her hypocritical in-laws. They barely seem to care about the passing of her son, and to see her husband attempt to defend his family members, despite their faults, only worsens the situation. When Rocky is on the verge of being overcome by these stresses, she suddenly finds herself enveloped in a mysterious fog that transports her far away from home. After she is displaced, she meets Rory McBaine, a boisterous Irishman, who promises to help her find her way home. This inexplicable turn of events perplexes Rocky, and as the lines between fantasy and reality become difficult to separate, she wonders if she has somehow lost her mind. She starts to believe that she is actually suffering from a mental breakdown, and hopes that she will return to reality and find her son alive after this bizarre episode subsides.
The twists and turns in The Fog will emotionally engage readers with Rocky’s tragedy, while simultaneously keeping them guessing as to whether or not her experiences are real or merely occurring inside her mind. Nolan’s work blends a genuine depiction of anguish and loss with elements of the supernatural and the extraordinary, resulting in a unique and engrossing reading experience.
