From the precincts of Acadie in Southern Louisiana comes an amazing book of spirit lore that has been preserved through generations of practice. This is the first book, of a series of two, of present-day people of the French Acadian community who work with spirit, using inherited spiritual gifts such as empathy, healing, sight, spirit communication, and more. In Southern Louisiana, these people are referred to as Traiteurs and the foundation of their faith and craft is the Trinity. V. M. Castel explores the mystical journey of birth and life in a living Traiteur in her new book Wonder Born.

Acadiana is rife with the practical and the arcane. Traiteurism is a very old method of faith healing involving the laying on of hands. It still finds many faithful adherents in Louisiana who have practically incorporated modern conventional medicine and Traiteur homeopathy such that they have a flexible range of resources for treating illnesses. Castel has focused on a particular family of Traiteurs of the Naquin lineage. Their craft, though syncretic (the attempted of union of different, even opposing religious principles), has found a center in the Trinitarian aspect of Christianity. Though each family has unique abilities, their discipline is akin to Native American medicine.

The tradition for the Traiteur’s life followed in Wonder Born has the most amazing aspects. The author carefully records and finds the provenance of these shamans’ practices. They include healing, energy manipulation, interaction with ghosts, affecting weather, precognition, animal/nature communication, dream travel, and manifestation. Part one of the book focuses on the circumstances surrounding the birth and early life of this unique people. Part two tells of resources used by the Naquin Traiteur family to live regular lives. Faith, magic, herbs, lore, and the spirit world – they belong to one nature and readers travel through Wonder Born and come to grips with the mystery and wonder of life attuned to the supernatural.
