When someone tells you they ‘don’t do New Year’s Resolutions’ don’t take them on face value. Nine out of ten people make secret New Year resolutions they don’t tell anyone about, according to a survey by one of the UK’s largest adult dating sites.

75% of them involved being more bad than good. Maritalaffair.co.uk, which has over 600,000 members in the UK and offers discrete dating for married or attached men and women, asked 100 of its members an open ended question to reveal their private vows for 2013.

Some of the responses were more savoury than others. Vowing to have at least one sexual experience outside their marriage or relationship, for example, was the top naughty resolution, while more tame secret resolutions like having a friends clear-out was also popular.

The most common answer was to plan to have at least one new fling this year, in secret. That’s hardly surprising giving the motivations of the members on the site, but other responses revealed more surprising things about the website members’ hidden motivations.

“I’m not going to be so open with my spouse in future so that when I do need to be secretive it will not look out of place,” wrote one 42-year old from the West Midlands who has been married for 10 years and joined the site six months ago.

Others echoed his remarks on protecting their whereabouts on a day-to-day basis. “I’m at the beck and call of my husband on the phone. I’m not going to always answer it. So that if there’s a time when I need to turn it off it won’t rouse suspicions,” wrote one 35-year old wife who says she uses the site ‘occasionally.’

Another common answer in the survey on secret resolutions was not to pass up on flirtatious opportunities with the opposite sex. Many respondents commented that they had regretted ‘being good’ when propositioned in the past by an attractive girl or guy and vowed not to let the opportunity slip them by again. One 48-year-old who goes by the name of Robert on the site wrote: “I met a girl through my sports club who flirted with me for months and made it very obvious what she wanted. I never acted on it because I was trying to be good and faithful! Not that my wife appreciates that. Now I wish I hadn’t been so good.”

Others disclosed that they did not intend to reveal that they were in a marriage or a relationship so readily. They didn’t necessarily intend to lie but just to be economical with the truth.

The survey also threw up more wholesome confessions, not connected with future strategy for seeking out a marital affair. Ditching friends who have become a burden was the most popular non-affair related secret resolution. Learning to be more assertive with both colleagues and family and friends was the second most common and scheming some sort of revenge on a boss, colleague or rival came out as a very varied and colourful number three!
