January will be a lot warmer for former Army Specialist Preston Young. Thanks to the support Sea to Ski Vacations gives to the Wounded Warrior Project, Preston and his wife Marilyn, who live in the Denver area, will enjoy a week-long vacation in Cancun Mexico, this month.
Preston served with the Army 82nd Airborne Division as a Paratrooper and a Forward Observer. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart for his actions when his unit was hit by an IED. Sea to Ski Vacations spokesperson Stephen Andrews says they are honored to provide this vacation to a decorated veteran, and more vacation giveaways are planned.
Preston was deployed to Afghanistan from Sept. 1, 2009 to Sept. 5, 2010. He spent the first four months on the Helmand/Kandahar border and the last portion of his deployment in the Arghandab River Valley, where he was injured. He was part of an infantry platoon that called in air strikes with helicopters and fast movers, medical evacuations, and IED locations. He left the military in 2011 after being injured by an IED.
“I joined the Army right after I graduated from high school and served for almost four years. I was in the 82nd Airborne Division as a Paratrooper. The reason I joined the military, as corny as it may sound, was to serve my country. I felt obligated to do my part for a country that has done so much for me. I wanted to fight to protect my country,” Preston said.
Preston was badly injured while on his way to help open a school for local children. His unit was hit by a large IED and it was his actions during this attack that led to Preston being awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and Purple Heart.
Now back home in Colorado, Preston says his injuries changed his life in a good way and he has gotten use to any limitations they created. He works out, stays active and does everything he is supposed to do to recover fully.
“I plan on finishing school and going into law enforcement. Being badly injured helped me realize what is really important in life. I enjoy spending time with my wife and fishing with my brother. We spend a lot of time on my Jon Boat and we have enjoyed a lot of time fishing and talking,” Preston said.
Andrews says Sea to Ski will continue its mission of Corporate Philanthropy, arranging vacations for wounded veterans and their families, as well as providing members with world class service.
