Dogs are special creatures, displaying emotions and feelings just like human beings. The emotional bond they form with their owners can be described as magical, and the happiness and joy they bring to people’s lives can even help in the recovery of the sick and the disabled. Author Virginia Jean Wesley tells the tale of her own canine companion, “Photon the Lionhearted,” and the big impact he had on her life.
The illustrated story begins with a small and sickly puppy, and how he had to fight hard to survive an illness even after the veterinarian medicated him. When the puppy recovered, he was found by his future human owner, Wesley, and the two fell in love at first sight. She named him Photon and took him with her to her family, who treasured their new puppy. In his new home, and with his new family, Photon embarked on many adventures with Wesley's daughter and grandchildren, and also accompanied Wesley when she was treated at the hospital. There, he made many new friends, and his presence was a gift to the other patients as they underwent their therapies. Photon brightened their lives and lifted their spirits, which greatly helped them heal faster.
After the hospital, Photon returned home. One night, he defended his family from a raccoon that was invading their backyard. The terrier fought with the wild animal and scared it away, earning him the name Photon the Lionhearted. At another time, when visiting Wesley’s friend, Photon encountered a new challenge and bit off more than he could chew when he met the bulldog Emma. Photon had to submit to the bigger dog, at least, until Emma was distracted. Then, Photon scampered off and hopped on top of Wesley, high above the jealous bulldog, and became king of the hill once more.
“Photon the Lionhearted” is a whimsical tale of the magic dogs can have on those around them, and how they can bring happiness and healing to people’s lives. Complete with colorful illustrations, and informative tidbits on the exotic origins of Tibetan Terriers, Wesley’s work is sure to delight dog lovers and casual readers alike with its touching story of caring canine camaraderie.
