In the midst of a small-town rumor-based panic, documentarians and authors Shane and Amy Bugbee found themselves run out of their home following death threats and even home break-ins by witch-hunting locals. With their dog and their turtle accompanying them, the couple spent the year running up to the 2008 election on the road, documenting their travels which took them from the most obscure Zip Codes to a Halliburton corporate function, and across the diverse spectrum of American cultures that defy the “polarized nation” dichotomy of simplistic contemporary media presentations.
“Sounds like fun until you consider, we began our journey with $180 between the four of us. This was a journey we never expected, it would have killed most people, it nearly killed us,” states artist and co-author Shane Bugbee.
The couple dedicated themselves to their project with no backing and no money in their pockets. They survived, not off grants and sponsor funding, but by working odd jobs found on Craigslist, and the kindness of strangers. They stayed with people of wildly -- sometimes shockingly -- divergent views and lifestyles while on the road, living literally on only a few dollars a day.
The Suffering and Celebration of Life in America reveals a startling cross-section of uncensored America and the gritty reality of life on the road.
