Author Jean Durgin Harlan describes the transformative power of life in a dramatically different culture in her new book, “Landing Right Side Up in Nehru’s India: Field Notes from a Punjab Sojourn” (published by iUniverse).
Part memoir, part travelogue, the book is Harlan’s narrative of her family’s experiences in 1962, after her husband accepted a Fulbright grant to teach at Punjab University in Chandigarh, India.
“Actively participating in a new culture was a frustrating and fascinating challenge,” Harlan writes of her family’s stay in the Punjab. In Harlan’s telling, culture shock often collided with curiosity, and surprise often led to laughter before maturing into deeper understanding.
“Its focus on an ordinary family coping with extraordinary circumstances makes it easy to relate to, allowing satisfying, vicarious sharing of those experiences,” Harlan says of her book.
