Psychotherapist, baby boomer, and mother of adult children, Linda M. Herman, LMHC, has written her first book, "Parents to the End: How Baby Boomers Can Foster Responsibility in Their Adult Children, Gain Peace of Mind, and Keep Their Hard-Earned Money" to guide fellow baby boomers through the difficulties of parenting adult kids. She draws on nearly two decades of work as a therapist, interviews, and research to help baby boomer parents. Renowned parenting expert, Thomas Phelan, PhD, author of "1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2 - 12", said that "Parents to the End" "answers questions in ways that go a long way toward establishing parental peace of mind."
Baby Boomer parents are in uncharted territory. As they move closer to retirement, they face challenges never expected in parenting their adult kids. Adult children are staying at home longer, making repeated requests for money, and are reluctant to leave the nest. For many young adults, jobs are hard to find, costs are high, debt is burdensome, and salaries are low. The unemployment rate for people age 18 to 29, in November 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, at 10.8%, was 40% higher than the national average.
In "Parents to the End", released January 1, 2013, Herman states, “As a generation, we boomers parented in an era of affluence. There was no roadmap to tell us when we had crossed the line from nurturing caregivers to debilitating enablers, nor reason to think that by contributing a down payment on our child’s first home we’d be setting them up for lifelong dependency. It is understandable why we thought we should help more: because we could. ‘Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do,’ parents often ask: We have the money.’”
To help parents get their kids on track, Herman is candid and offers straightforward advice: “if you thought your job was done when your child finished high school or college, landed that first job, or finally signed the lease on his first apartment, it may be time to reevaluate your expectations.”
"Parents to the End" is written in a conversational manner and includes sections that provide parenting strategies aimed at easing stress:
