Popular retailer DownEast has marked off 2012 as another successful year of growth. The Salt Lake City-based company announced today that it opened another six store locations last year and expanded its employee base by five percent. Sales growth also continued, including most notably a significant increase in the home furnishings side of the business as the housing market rebounds.
DownEast’s success continues to be based on its unfaltering motto of “high style, low price.” The company emerged from humble beginnings, co-founded by the college-aged Freedman brothers who began selling liquidated merchandise from the back of a friend’s delicatessen in Provo. Two decades later, DownEast now operates 52 stores throughout the western United States in addition to having a national presence via its online store. The company employs more than 500 people.
“2012 marked our 21st year in business as well as the opening of our 52nd store, and we are pleased and honored by the success we’ve had serving the market here in Utah and in other areas of the country,” said Klane Murphy, CEO at DownEast. “Our ‘high style on a budget’ philosophy clearly resonates with shoppers, and we continually strive to bring them the highest quality products – including the top brand names – at the very best prices.”
In addition to its own, popular private-label lines of apparel and home furnishings, DownEast also offers a broad range of items from some of the leading national brands – at a remarkable 50 to 70 percent off suggested retail.
DownEast Continues Tradition of Charitable Giving and Volunteerism
In 2012, DownEast also continued its tradition of giving back to the communities where it does business. “Our goal has always been to be a company with a conscience and a great place to work,” said Murphy. “We’re proud of our consistently high employee participation rate in our charitable activities, both locally and in other parts of the world.”
DownEast raised $25,000 with its “LIVE for Pink” promotional campaign in 2012. The annual event taking place each October since 2008 has provided more than $113,000 for breast-cancer related charities to date. DownEast also again sponsored the Pink Half Marathon in Park City. Other charitable activities in 2012 supported the Road Home Apple Tree Campaign, as well as numerous youth, school and university programs.
Expanding beyond its geographic borders, DownEast also continues to partner with CHOICE Humanitarian. In 2012, a team of DownEast employees once again traveled with CHOICE to rural Guatemala to work on community development projects in the company’s adopted village.
