Train Chartering’s Private Rail Cars Offers the Milwaukee Road No. 261, the largest operating coal-burning steam locomotive in North America, on its first excursion train since 2008.

The power and majesty of a classic American engine in full glory, an icon of the US railroads, pulling refurbished heritage rail cars. This moment in railway history is not to be missed.

Private Rail Cars is promoting this rail event. Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 261, the largest operating coal-burning steam locomotive in North America pulls it first steam excursion since 2008. No. 261, built by American Locomotive Co. in 1944, has undergone an extensive four-year overhaul.

The excursion will operate over BNSF Railway’s freight-only line from Minneapolis to Duluth, Minn. In Duluth, the train will be met by another classic steam locomotive, Soo Line 4-6-2 No. 2719 built in 1923. The 2719 will pull a special evening dinner train excursion to benefit the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. A night photo session will be held on May 11 with both locos, 261 and 2719.

Highlights of the journey include:

  • 300 miles of main line steam operation (over freight-only lines)
  • Cocktail reception and special dinner train excursion with Soo Line 2719
  • Admission to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, one of the finest railway museums in the United States whose displays include the Iron Range Railway’s 2-8-8-4 “Yellowstone” No. 227, one of the largest steam locomotives ever constructed.

Ticket prices for the Minneapolis-Duluth 261 excursion are $399 for Premium Class, $ 299 First Class, $179 Coach Class ($79 for children 12 and under). Night Photo Session tickets are $49 (limited to 50 participants). Tickets for the reception and 2719 Dinner Train are $140 (limited to 150 passengers).

There are non-stop flights from London to Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport on Delta and KLM airlines. While in Minnesota, visit the Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the United States, conveniently located near MSP Airport.
