TCC Group, an organization that develops strategies and programs that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of nonprofits, philanthropies, and corporate citizenship programs, today issued a study that examines the significant gap between both the compensation and performance of women and men who lead nonprofits.
According to the data, even though they are more effective leaders on nearly every scale, women are paid 75¢ for every $1 made by their male counterparts. Men, who comprise 36 percent of nonprofit leaders, earn a yearly average of $121,625 versus women leaders’ $89,474 .
Despite lower salaries, women-led nonprofits are more effective in many critical management areas than organizations run by men. For instance, women demonstrate a higher capacity to create and communicate inspiring visions and are stronger at program evaluation. They are also more likely to emphasize staff growth and development, address and resolve conflict, and explore a wide range of problem solving techniques.
While women and men are similarly effective fundraisers, their compensation remains unequal, no matter the organization’s size. For instance, when comparing salaries at nonprofits with revenues between $1.25M and $3.75M and with annual growth rates greater than 20 percent, women make $115,000/year, while their male counterparts are paid $135,000.
TCC Group relied on 990 forms and its proprietary Core Capacity Assessment Tool (CCAT) to measure the salaries and organizational effectiveness of 1,000 nonprofits.
