On January 22, Colle Farmers Market, a movement dedicated to linking organic farmers with consumers, commends an Australian study, mentioned in an article in LA Weekly, that implies that individuals who consume more local vegetables are more likely to have improved lung function and less asthma symptoms.

According to the Australian study in the article by Emily Dwass, in LA Weekly, “Eating lots of fruits and vegetables may help reduce asthma symptoms.” Nevertheless, experts caution that dietary changes should not replace current asthma treatments, but could be significant in future treatments. “The results suggest that dietary modifications could play a role in a patient’s treatment plan,” Dwass reports.

Based on the study, individuals consumed a “high-antioxidant diet, including five servings of vegetables and two fruit portions each day for two weeks,” showed improvements in their lungs and breathing. The LA Weekly article notes, “A previous study found that eating a Mediterranean diet – one low in saturated fats and high in fruits, vegetables and fish – is associated with a reduced occurrence of asthma in populations of children.” However, while fruits and vegetables are a natural source of vitamins and antioxidants, they have not been an official component in treatment plans.

Embracing the possibility of using diet as a part of treatment, Colle Farmers Market commends the study and says, “We’re thrilled that experts can show the health potential in consuming more fruits and vegetables.” Colle adds, “We’re committed to fueling the public with natural, organic produce by joining local, organic farmers with consumers.”

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation.
