Can Americans take a moment, relax and reflect with pride on the inauguration of our 44th president with a puzzle featuring an enjoyable mix of trivia and challenge? BlackCrosswords.com answers, “Yes, we can.” The website, now the primary destination for puzzle enthusiasts seeking crosswords relating to African-American trivia, is offering a free, printable commemorative crossword entitled, “Barack Obama: The First Black President, The Second Time Around." The puzzle can be accessed at http://www.blackcrosswords.com

According to Jan Buckner Walker, nationally syndicated creator, of crossword puzzles and founder of BlackCrosswords.com, “The puzzle contains a wide variety of clues -- from one that triggers memories of the famed 'beer summit' to a query about the First Lady’s humorous reason for picking Will Smith as the actor best suited to play her husband.”

Walker, who has created crossword for magazines such as Essence and Ebony, was tapped by the 2009 inauguration planners to provide family puzzles for inclusion in the gift bags for the Children’s Inaugural Ball and the Illinois State Ball. Having lived just blocks from the Obamas in Hyde Park and shared membership in Chicago’s Black Women Lawyers Association with Michelle, Walker is a longtime Obama fan. “In my experience,” she said, “Barack Obama is the sharpest person in any room he’s in. It’s been an incredible joy to witness his rise to the presidency and the successes he has forged while in office.”

The Obama crossword has been a hit with solvers of all ages. Eighth grade teacher Koai Matthews noted that the puzzle was enjoyable, not only for him, but also for his students at a University of Chicago charter school. “The puzzle about Obama makes me look forward to more activities like this that highlight the achievements of African-Americans,” he said. According to Earl Carter, an 85-year-old, retired owner of a dry cleaner in Highland, Indiana, “ I've never been a big crossword fan, but the Obama puzzle was so much fun and so satisfying to solve about a subject you enjoy and discover that you know the answers.”

Posted on Inauguration Day, the puzzle offers the website’s fans a preview of its “Excellence in Black” puzzle series. The series, which will debut in February in honor of Black History Month, will provide a new puzzle each week, exploring the life of a prominent African-American in entertainment, sports or politics.

The site also features an eBook, entitled “In Our Own Words: Fun Crosswords About Trivia, Pop Culture and History with an African-American Flavor,” available for $5.99, downloadable at http://www.BlackCrosswords.com.

BLACKCROSSWORDS.COM
BlackCrosswords.com is the leading destination for African-American crossword fans, veteran and new. The website has tapped into an unmet appetite – African-Americans who are poised to enjoy crosswords, but have historically felt excluded by the focus and content of mainstream crosswords. Spurred by the overwhelming success of the Essence magazine crossword, a reader favorite, Walker has responded to the demand by launching http://www.blackcrosswords.com last fall. Since then, the site has drawn widespread attention. In the first month of its existence, the BlackCrosswords.com Facebook page saw 1.5 million impressions, achieved a total overall reach of nearly 250,000 and garnered over 2000 fans.
