Key Largo, FL (PRWEB) January 23, 2013
Ocean Reef Club’s 18th Annual Vintage Weekend, held November 29–December 2, brought together owners and admirers of classic and antique yachts, aircraft and automobiles. The renowned private club in the Florida Keys was a showcase for meticulously restored conveyances with storied pasts, and the 2012 award winners represent the best of the best.
American motoring classics
Beautifully preserved automobiles were on display, many from an era when automobiles were crafted by hand rather than on an assembly line. Best of Show honors went to the 1930 Jaguar SS100 and the Best American Classic was awarded to the 1930 Dusenberg J Barrelside. The People’s Choice Award went to 1931 LaSalle Moxie Box Car, a well-deserved accolade, as it is the only original such vehicle in the world. Used a promotional vehicle for the Moxie brand soda company, the driver sits atop a life-size model horse and drives the car using stirrups as the accelerator and brakes. The car’s owner, Ted Valpey, Jr. was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Standing room only for vintage yachts
In the marina, vintage yachts drew crowds all weekend, and the painstaking restoration of JFK’s famed presidential yacht, the Honey Fitz, earned the title of Spectator’s Choice. Jim Moores of Moores Marine also provided an intimate look at the restoration process, which included replacing much of the vessel’s structure, while keeping the interiors and galleys much the same as when Kennedy used her for meetings and getaways with his family.
Another stunner was The Cigarette, a 1963 25’ Formula powerboat, which won the Best Restoration award. The first standard Formula to be built and raced by the legendary Donald Aronow, this special boat has returned to the performance boating spotlight, thanks to an outstanding rebuild by owner Robert DeNisco.
Rare war birds soar
As with the yachts and the cars, each aircraft displayed over the weekend had a history to be marveled at. Drawing much admiration from vintage aircraft enthusiasts was the winner of the Hero Award: the 1943 B-25 Mitchell Bomber, best remembered as the aircraft used in the Doolittle Raid against Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
The highflying aerobatic show over the beach has become a growing tradition for Vintage Weekend, and this year, it didn’t disappoint. The growing crowd at Buccaneer Island came from all across the country to share in an appreciation for all things vintage.
Vintage Weekend is an annual event, held during the first weekend in December. Though the renowned club is a private member-owned community, non-member guests share in Ocean Reef Club’s unique way of life through this prestigious show of classic yachts, revered automobiles and vintage aircraft.
