The Better Business Bureau of Utah (BBB) recently published their list of Top Ten industries for consumer complaints in 2012. The complete list and numbers are available at: utah.bbb.org/article/2012-bbb-utah-top-ten-complaint-industries-39269. According to the list, alarm companies continue to be No.1 on the list for consumer complaints. Home security professionals from responsehomesecurity.com commented on the numbers and appealed for attention from all home security professionals.

According to numbers provided by BBB, for the year 2012, BBB provided a record high of over 2,000,000 instances of services to consumers. The BBB business reviews were viewed by the public for over 1.9 million times during year 2012. This is an increase of more than 14% over the previous year of 2011. The organization filed over 16,000 complaints in one year. Number of complaints has decreased for around 5% compared to the year of 2011. 77% of the complaints have been resolved. According to Jane Driggs, president and CEO of the BBB, while the number of complaints decreased, successful resolution rate has increased in Year 2012. Increased resolution rate was mostly due to individual company’s active reactions to complaints.

Home security professionals from responsehomesecurity.com commented on the overall number of complaints and changes in resolution rate: “It’s definitely a good thing that number of complaints has decreased compared to year of 2011. I believe it indicates that consumers were doing their homework before purchasing their home security systems. That’s a good thing. Doing some research on a specific company has never been this easy before, you just connect to the Internet and you get tons of information. Lots of the information and reviews are even from people you know, so they are trustworthy information sources. The convenience for consumers to get real reviews and information on a company has compelled a company to resolve existing issues too. I think that explains the higher resolution rate.”

The Top Ten industries for consumer complaints in 2012 are: Burglar Alarm Companies, Mortgage Audits, Health & Medical Products, Training Program Companies, Billing Services (mainly gym related), Exercise Equipment & Machines, Computers Hardware, Software & Services, Credit Repair Services, Emergency Disaster Preparedness Equipment and Sales, Auto Dealers – New Vehicles. With a total number of 1825, alarm companies top the list of consumer complaints for 2012. This is an increase of 61.5% over the year of 2011. Resolution rate for this industry is 96.77%, higher than average resolution rate of 76.9% across all industries for 2012.

“I’ve been in the home security industry for a long time, and I understand the struggles that people in this industry have. Struggles are everywhere, not just in our industry, and struggles don’t justify your behavior of enticing customers with blurry commitments so that they will purchase an alarm system from you. This is not the way to build a long lasting business. Business nowadays depends more and more on trust, so I believe that whoever builds more trust throughout the process would eventually win the market. I appeal to all professionals in this industry to make efforts to build trust throughout the process and really care about the needs and concerns of our customers”, said one home security professional from responsehomesecurity.com.
