On January 24, 2013, accounts receivable collection agency, Rapid Recovery Solution, responded to an article from The Inquisitr, regarding suicides in the UK being linked to debt collectors.
According to the Inquisitr article, “Intimidating debt collectors and irresponsible lending are to blame for thousands of suicides in Briton, according to a new report on Wednesday.” The article states that England University of Brighton researchers found that those suffering from wage freezes, benefit cuts, and the poor economy, have become emotionally beaten when having to deal with harassment from debt collectors.
According to the article, “Debt clients frequently feel humiliated, disconnected and entrapped, with the process of debt collection having a clear impact on people’s mental health.” The article informs that there were 6,045 reported suicide cases in the UK, and is reflected by the countries hit the hardest by recession.
According to Marjorie Wallace, the chief executive of British mental health charity SANE, “These figures … reveal the profound human consequences of the economic downturn, in which unemployment, debt and the relationship breakdowns that often follow can push people who may already be vulnerable to take their own lives.”
John Monderine, CEO of accounts receivable collection agency, Rapid Recovery Solution, offered his thoughts on the recent article. “Although this is very sad and disturbing news, there is no real direct link to debt collectors causing the suicides, said Monderine. “However, I will agree that unfortunately there are some collection agencies out there that harass consumers, and use unlawful tactics on them that could potentially cause a mental breakdown of a consumer. Thankfully, new rules and federal agencies are monitoring the way agencies collect on debts to eliminate harassment.”
