United Planet is excited to offer a new opportunity to volunteer in India at the Jaipur elephant sanctuary. While United Planet has offered volunteer programs in India for years, this wildlife conservation project is the first of its kind for the organization. "We're excited to offer more opportunities for volunteers to work directly with animals," says Theresa Higgs, Vice President of Global Operations at United Planet. “This program is part of our broad approach to environmental and wildlife conservation, and ultimately supports our commitment to international sustainable development and responsible travel. Plus, working with animals is important, rewarding -- and fun!"
Over the last 75 years, the Indian elephant population has dwindled dramatically. In 1986, the Indian elephant became an endangered species, and today it is estimated that only 25,000 – 30,000 of its kind remain. Elephants have long been an important part of Indian culture and religion – and volunteers can help ensure that these animals receive proper care and respect. Volunteers choosing to work on the Elephant Sanctuary Quest will live and work along side local people, feeding the elephants, bathing and cleaning them, and performing general maintenance and upkeep of the facility. Volunteers will learn first-hand how to care for the majestic creatures while developing relationships with both the animals and their handlers.
Those who wish to volunteer may begin their program at any time during the year, but must commit to at least two weeks at the elephant sanctuary. Although there is no language requirement, volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate. For more detailed information on the Elephant Sanctuary Quest and the enrollment process, please visit United Planet’s Volunteer in India web page.
United Planet is committed to developing safe and worthwhile programs for those interested in volunteering in India, along with many other countries around the world.
