Varicose Veins

Prescott, Ariz. (PRWEB) January 29, 2013

Robin M. Fleck M.D., founder and medical director of Prescott Vein Specialties extends a warm welcome to Jessica L. Peters CNA, who has joined the team at Vein Specialties this month. Jessica is a graduate of Yavapai Healthcare Academy where she received her nursing assistant certification. She is currently pursuing a degree in nursing at Yavapai Community College with plans to obtain credentials to serve as a nurse practitioner. She is looking forward to helping people in Northern Arizona at Vein Specialties in the year to come. In her new position, Jessica will play a key role in evaluating patients for venous disease and assisting Dr. Fleck during varicose vein treatments. She also educates patients about the causes of venous insufficiency and spider veins and what can be done about them.

“The percentage of people who suffer from problems related to varicose and spider veins on their legs is nearly 50% of the US population. Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic issue; without treatment they can cause serious medical problems such as skin discoloration and thickening, stasis dermatitis, venous leg ulcers and blood clots.” Jessica describes. “Many people don’t realize that their veins may be causing symptoms such as pain, swelling, cramps and restless legs, and that varicose vein treatment is no longer a complicated and painful process. We strive to bring more understanding about what modern vein treatments can do to help.”

Robin Fleck M.D. remarks, “Vein stripping is now a thing of the past as endovenous laser ablation is now used almost exclusively to treat large bulging varicose veins in a quick and painless outpatient procedure.” In order to treat problem veins, a thorough examination is first carried out using a Doppler ultrasound to investigate the condition of the venous system. During the vein treatment session, a local anesthetic is injected and then a laser is threaded into the vein. As the laser is withdrawn it gently heats and closes the vein. This procedure takes only twenty minutes, and afterwards the patient can return to work immediately. The symptoms of varicose veins and venous insufficiency are immediately relieved, without the need for painful surgery and most insurance companies cover the cost of treatment.

After the problem veins are treated, ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy is used to manage any smaller veins that remain. Sclerotherapy is a safe and uncomplicated procedure that is used to treat spider veins. Once the series of treatments is completed, compression hosiery is worn for several weeks after the procedures. This ensures that the closed veins can heal and blood is rerouted to healthier veins. These procedures are medically necessary to prevent the complications which could otherwise occur.
